By the time you read this, the race packets will have been stuffed, the t-shirts are folded, the course is marked, and fingers are crossed for good weather tomorrow. The 30th running of the Ashland Railroad Run begins bright and early Saturday at 8:30 am, as the kids take off for the 1 Mile Kid’s Run. The 10K begins at 9:00 and the 5K Fun Walk begins at 9:15. Come over to the Arts and Activities Center to join in the festivities and cheer on the runners as they cross the finish line. Jo Ann Hunter and Faith Boyle deserve a round of applause for their hard work. The success of this event is due to their dedication and perseverance. Typical Ashlanders!
I missed some birthdays this past week: Tracy Brown’s birthday was March 10th, and Katie Thompson, daughter of Mary Kay and Jim Thompson turned 2 on March 9th. Happy Birthday girls!
The deadline for submitting your family’s story to the Ashland Yearbook is only a few weeks away. Don’t find another excuse- just go to the website and get this done. The Ashland Plant 150 Committee is looking for organizations (scouts, church groups, Key Club, Shriners, etc.) to help with the Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, April 26th. This wonderful committee is going to make Ashland pretty for her birthday by planting 150 trees in town. At 9 am on April 26th, there will be a celebration as a Norway spruce is planted at Town Hall for a town Christmas tree. Following the planting, the Committee will be sponsoring a clean-up of DeJarnette and Carter Park. A free parenting workshop entitled: “Who’s in Charge? Dealing with Power Struggles” will be held Thursday, March 20th from 6:30 to 8 pm at the Patrick Henry YMCA on Ashcake Road. This workshop will help parents learn to identify when a power struggle is developing and techniques to end them peacefully. Hmm, this could be a good event for some politicians, too. The place to be tonight (Friday) is the Ashland Library for Family Movie Night. “To Kill a Mockingbird” will begin at 6 pm, with food provided by The Friends of the Ashland Library. Gosh, that would be a good movie to see on the big screen, wouldn’t it? Too bad we don’t have a movie theater in town…..
If you’re not worn out from the Railroad Run, you will be after you join the Randolph-Macon students in their 7th Annual Dance Marathon. The co-eds will be dancing all day long- from 9 in the morning to 9 at night. This is a great event for kids, with food, prizes, and four moon-bounces.
