3/25/10 COTU Spring, Marathoners, Firehouse Movies, Railroad Run

Oh, you lucky people! What a wonderful time of year to be living in the Center of the Universe. Daffodils are in full bloom, the cherry & pear trees are coming out, and soon that vivid green of new leaves will start to spread. There are baby chicks at the Feed Store and hundreds of young vegetable plants to start your garden. My garden always looked perfect until June, when the heat would make those weeds grow faster than I could pull them.

This coming Saturday, March 27, is a special event for the Firehouse Theater. It's "Irish" night, and there will dancers from the An Cor Rud School of Irish Step Dance giving a performance at 7:30 PM. Immediatly following the dancers, John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and the ever-loveable Barry Fitzgerald will lead us on a marvelous tour of Ireland in the movie, "The Quiet Man." Tickets are $6 and there are snacks and drinks available at the concession stand.

You really must go online and sign up for the Railroad Run. We have a new and improved course this year that has been tried and tested by Ashland's elite runners. This year's race will be held on Saturday, April 10th and the day will include the Second Annual Green Fair. The race is a 10K (6.2 miles) and there is also a 5K Fun Walk. Be "green" and sign up on-line at http://www.hanoverarts.org/.

The performance of "We Were There: History through the Arts" is this weekend: March 26th & 27th at 7 p.m. at the Blackwell Auditorium on the campus of Randolph-Macon College. Come to this FREE event and enjoy the stories and songs of Ashland & Hanover County residents. For more information contact The Hanover Arts and Activities Center at (804) 798-2728. http://www.hanoverarts.org/.

Congratulations to all the Ashlanders who ran in the Shamrock Marathon and Half-Marathon in Virginia Beach this past weekend! Craig Hatz, Tana Garcia, Amy Rutherford, Jill Grant, Corinne Luck, and Tracy Brown ran in the Half-Marathon and all finished with very fast times. Rodney Bardwell, Bob Brown, Dave Klisz, Bryan Cline, and myself ran in the full Marathon, and had an incredible experience. We were so fortunate to have good friends to lean on during those miles when you thought you couldn't go any further. With a little courage, perseverance, and a friend who says, "You can do it and I'll help you get there." ... we surely are unlimited in the things that we can accomplish.

I have again proved my theory that this little spot, this Center of the Universe, is a very, very special place. Magic happens all around us.

It's a shame we didn't get any snow this winter...

Especially since we're building this new town ski lodge.  I mean, I guess it could potentially bring in tourism dollars, if we ...
